Gambling, Identity & Risk: Understanding Context Without Assumptions

Gambling-related harm is not evenly distributed across populations, but identity itself does not cause gambling-related harm. 

In this 90-minute Clinical Conversations open forum, clinicians will explore how marginalization, minority stress, gambling exposure, economic pressures, and access to care may shape gambling-related risk across LGBTQIA+ communities and other historically marginalized populations, including Black and African American, Indigenous and Native, Hispanic and Latino, and Asian American communities, as well as people with disabilities and people experiencing poverty.

Through polls, discussion, and case examples, participants will practice distinguishing disparities from stereotypes and identify ways to improve clinical language, screening, and intake practices. Consistent with the Clinical Conversations format, the session emphasizes participant questions and discussion rather than lecture.

Each session provides a collaborative space for professionals to ask questions, share experiences, exchange resources, and learn from one another. Topics may include clinical practice, emerging gambling trends, prevention, recovery, public health, technology, ethics, policy, and other issues impacting individuals and communities experiencing gambling-related harm.

Clinical Conversations is designed as an interactive discussion—not a webinar or traditional presentation. Participants are expected to actively contribute to the conversation by asking questions, sharing professional experiences and perspectives, and engaging respectfully with other participants.

Come prepared to listen, ask questions, share what you're seeing, and learn from your colleagues.

Learning Objectives
1. Identify key barriers preventing routine gambling screening.
2. Recognize how modern gambling environments impact detection and disclosure.
3. Develop practical, setting-specific strategies to incorporate gambling screening into routine practice.

Continuing Education:

1.5 CEUs are available for this session, which can be used toward obtaining or maintaining the GAMB Endorsement through the Ohio Chemical Dependency Board or towards becoming a counselor qualified to treat gambling disorder through the Ohio Social Worker, Counselor, and Marriage & Family Therapist Board.
