Description:
This training builds awareness of the often-hidden connection between problem gambling, financial stress, mental health challenges, and suicide risk, while equipping participants with practical tools to respond. Participants will explore the continuum of gambling behavior, review Ohio-specific data, and learn to recognize warning signs that gambling-related distress may be escalating. The training also addresses common barriers that prevent individuals from seeking help, highlights protective factors that reduce isolation and increase safety, and offers simple, supportive strategies for having conversations and connecting people to resources. Designed to reduce silence and strengthen our collective response, this session emphasizes awareness, compassion, and action.
Goals: To build awareness, reduce silence, and strengthen our collective ability to respond to gambling-related suicide risk.
Learning Objectives:
- Describe the relationship between problem gambling, financial stress, mental health & suicide risk.
- Recognize warning signs that gambling-related distress may be escalating toward suicidal thoughts or behaviors.
- Understand barriers that prevent people experiencing problem gambling from seeking help.
- Identify protective factors & supportive responses that reduce isolation & increase safety.
- Apply simple strategies for having supportive conversations & connecting individuals to help.
