We invite you to apply to participate as a presenter for the 31st National Conference on Problem Gambling. This is a unique opportunity to interact with and reach a diverse group of public health, prevention, treatment, advocacy, recovery, research, regulatory, and industry professionals.
The conference will focus on four main track themes: Treatment | Responsible Gambling & Regulation | Prevention | Recovery & Community
The theme of the conference is Listening, Learning, Leading and we are seeking timely, relevant and fresh presentations that incorporate elements of this theme in areas such as:
- Advances in treatment including brief interventions, pharmaceutical trials, alternative therapies, co-occurring disorders, outcome studies, and research to practice;
- Professional and clinical ethics in treatment, research and prevention;
- Proven and promising prevention programs and models across different domains and populations;
- Recovery oriented topics, including recovery oriented systems of care, self help, relapse prevention and recovery supports;
- Developments in responsible gambling policy, programs, legislation and regulation;
- Concerns about special populations such as seniors, youth and racial/ethnic minorities;
- Calculating social and economic costs of gambling addiction, strategic planning for services, changes in incidence and prevalence of gambling problems;
- Implications of DSM-5 gambling addiction criteria, Affordable Care Act and healthcare reform on the problem gambling field;
- Impacts of gambling on active-duty military personnel and veterans and their families, including barriers to treatment, and impact of co-occurring disorders;
- Developments in social casino gaming, including addiction risks, potential harm reduction uses, implications of convergence with other types of gambling, consumer protection and regulatory policy;
- Implications of the intersection of athletics, fantasy sports, gambling and addiction;
- Introductory sessions for groups new to the gambling, responsible gaming and problem gambling fields.
Behavioral health, social work, mental health and substance abuse counseling professionals comprise the majority of the audience; other attendees include researchers, legislators, regulators, prevention specialists, gaming industry executives and employees, media, policy makers, recovering gamblers, and family members.

Pre-Conference Workshops are held Wednesday-Thursday, July 19-20.
All other sessions will be held in the Main Conference Friday-Saturday, July 21-22.
Presentations are accepted in the following formats:
- Main Conference Breakout presentations are usually given by one presenter focusing on a specific topic, but may also be configured as a Panel or Roundtable with up to three additional speakers. Breakout presentations are given in sessions of 60 minutes, which includes time for introductions and questions.
- Main Conference PED Talks—Problem gambling EDucational Talks (modeled on TED talks) are intended to showcase one well-formed idea that is new or relevant, interesting and dynamic—in 15 minutes and using no more than 10 slides.
- Main Conference Posters are presented during the 30 minute networking breaks and provide presenters with the opportunity to be seen by all conference attendees in a more informal and interactive venue. Poster presentations require the visual display of the essential contents of a paper (e.g., abstract, short narrative, enlarged graphs or pictures, and a brief conclusion).
- Main Conference Prevention Showcase features selected prevention programs in an interactive session. Presenters will display their program materials in an exhibit hall setting as well as provide a brief presentation.
- Pre-Conference Workshops are offered for intensive and specific skill development which incorporates hands-on exercises and a significant amount of attendee participation/interaction in a small group setting. Sessions are either half (4 hours) or full day in length (8 hours). Participants must sign up in advance for a limited number of seats.
The 2017 Conference is projected to draw over 600 attendees, and the opportunity to present is highly sought after. We anticipate receiving more submissions than can be accommodated, and encourage complete and timely submissions. The submission process is conducted online and contains the application form and complete details about the process. All applicants will be notified of the decision regarding their submission by December 23rd.
Presentations should reflect original work. The 2017 Program Committee will consider the presenter(s) experience and credentials as well as the impact of the presentation, how it will enhance participant’s specific knowledge and skill levels, the incorporation of evidence-based or best practices, and the practicality and adaptability of the presentation. All presenters, co-presenters, and panelists are required to register themselves for the conference, according to a special code that they will received. They are also responsible for their own travel and accommodation expenses. Co-presenters will be listed in the program only if they are actually presenting. Only the lead presenter receives a complimentary registration.
All who submit a proposal will be notified by December 23, 2016 regarding the Committee’s decision, which is final. NCPG reserves the absolute right to accept or reject submissions at its sole discretion. We are happy to accommodate any special needs, but please let us know as soon as possible to allow us to make appropriate arrangements.
